ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Visitor Services and Shop Manager or Café Supervisor as appropriate.

SUMMARY

Works as part of a professional, service-oriented team of Member and Visitor Services Associates promoting the museum, supporting cultural experiences and generating revenue at the Café, Shop and Visitor Services Desk. This position is part-time hourly, non-exempt.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Possess the high-level skills necessary to provide outstanding customer service, sell museum memberships and build long-term customer relationships.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of museum operations and keep current with museum activities through resources such as the museum’s website, social media sites, weekly e-blast, Outlook calendar and publications.
  • Conduct day-to-day activities such as processing transactions through the point-of-sale system, cash handling, performing opening and closing duties and maintaining cleanliness and neatness of workspace.
  • Cross-train as needed in the daily activities of the Visitor Services Desk, Café and Shop.
  • Be available to regularly work up to 24 hours weekly including Thursdays and weekends with the flexibility to work on / around several holidays annually. The museum is open, for example, on Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and on the days surrounding holidays such as Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Christmas. Additional hours are required during First Night, Akron’s Community New Year’s Eve Celebration, exhibition openings, museum fundraisers, special events outside of the museum’s regular hours, in order to attend some meetings and during other Member and Visitor Services Associates’ absences.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Member and Visitor Services Coordinator, Café Manager or Shop Manager / Buyer as appropriate.

VISITOR SERVICE DESK DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Answer the museum’s main telephone line, dispense general information or transfer calls to appropriate staff members.
Maintain attendance count.

CAFÉ DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare and serve coffee, tea and wraps. Serve food items such as pastries, soups and boxed lunches, as well as bottled beverages, beer and wine.
Maintain health code standards for food service and uphold museum safety standards.

SHOP DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Generate sales.
  • Assist Shop Manager / Buyer with processing and shipping orders placed from outside the Shop, checking in merchandise, restocking merchandise, resetting displays and conducting annual physical inventory.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS

High School Diploma required. Food service, reception or retail experience required. ServSafe Certification a plus. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age in order to fulfill all job duties which may include serving alcohol at the Café and other museum events.

SKILLS AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Proven interpersonal and customer service skills; outgoing, friendly personality; strong written and verbal skills; mature judgment; flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing needs of organization. Possess a neat appearance and good personal hygiene. Appreciation of art preferred.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work areas are primarily indoors, in a climate-controlled environment with moderate background noise. Work is subject to many interruptions and pressure due to simultaneous orders.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Sitting / Standing / Walking – Approximately 95% of time in the Café or Shop work areas is spent standing or moving around. Approximately 95% of the time in the Visitor Services Desk area is spent sitting.
  • Speaking / Hearing – Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with co-workers, customers and outside agencies, by telephone and in person.
  • Vision – Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary to effectively use the cash register and interpret written information.
  • Climbing / Balancing – The ability to climb and balance on a step ladder is necessary for stocking food, beverages, and supplies.
  • Stooping / Kneeling – The ability to stoop and kneel is necessary for accessing files, and stocking food, beverages and supplies.
  • Reaching / Handling – Good manual dexterity is necessary for cash register use and for retrieving and working with appropriate paperwork, equipment, and supplies.
