For December’s Art Hop, we will be hosting artist Maryann Wohlwend. Here is what Maryann says about her work:
“On Christmas morning, the year I was 8, I was delighted by the gift of all gifts, a copy of MacMillan’s Illustrated Children’s Dictionary. That pretty much sums up my life & work… Still captivated by the wonder of words & pictures, I sculpt & shape classic children’s book illustrations into 3D shadowbox creations: {Whimsical Worlds}.
With surgical instruments, I define & draw out details (much like my skill as a discerning counselor), to delight the inner child. A single phrase, specific scene, or certain character takes the stage in its shadowbox. I carefully consider collages of mixed materials for each work: from 3D modeled character cameos cut from cardstock & layered over torn texts, to found objects & props constructed from book pages layered upon fabulous fabric backdrops.
