Relief printmaking is the oldest type of printmaking in the world, dating back to the Egyptians in 500 BCE. The process involves removing the “whites” of a drawing from a block of wood, a piece of linoleum, or some other material. The image left after carving is raised up “in relief.” Apply ink to the surface of the block, and the image can be printed again and again. In this class, we will learn the basic process for making linocuts, relief prints from linoleum. Let’s get printing!

About the instructor:

Claire Marks is a multimedia artist based in Akron, Ohio. Marks draws and paints using a variety of mediums, primarily monotype, colored pencil, graphite, pen and ink, oil paint and watercolor. She fell in love with printmaking while a student at the Cleveland Institute of Art, especially the painterly monotype process. Her work is inspired by great works of literature, her fascination with psychology, philosophy, and the pursuit of acceptance and truth in a world filled with suffering. Marks’ work has been included in numerous group exhibitions around northeast Ohio. She is the recipient of Zygote Press’ Emerging Artist Fellowship in 2015 and the Cleveland Institute of Art’s First Agnes Gund Traveling Scholarship.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

All Are welcome but children under the age of 14 years old require an adult supervision at the event!

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There are four parking spaces directly behind Rubber City Prints. Rubber City Prints is located in a light blue house with a RED Door off Stewart WAY! There is also a Municipal Lot next to Gypsy Grace that has free parking after 6pm. There is also an empty lot in front of the tax building on Balch St. Road Parking on Balch Street as well.

What can I bring into the event?

You may bring food & Drink to Rubber City Prints. All Alcohol at the event must be capped and no empty containers may leave the event site.
