Searching The Reporter: Akron’s African American Newspaper and Other Historic Newspapers on Ohio Memory

The Reporter, Akron’s African American newspaper covering 1969-2016, is now available and full-text searchable on Ohio Memory! Join Jenni Salamon of the Ohio History Connection to learn how this newspaper was transformed from hardcopy to microfilm to digital images, as well as tips on how to search the digital collection as part of your genealogy or local history research.

The digitization of the Akron-Summit County Public Library’s collection of The Reporter was funded in part by the Dick and Chris Chenoweth fund of the Akron Community Foundation.

Ohio Memory is the collaborative digital library program of the Ohio History Connection and the State Library of Ohio whose mission is to help communities share, discover and connect to Ohio’s rich past through dynamic online resources. The website provides free access to over 700,000 digital images from over 360 cultural heritage institutions representing all 88 of Ohio’s counties.

Jenni Salamon is the Coordinator for the Ohio Digital Newspaper Program at the Ohio History Connection where she manages their newspaper digitization and microfilming projects, including the National Digital Newspaper Program in Ohio. She has been with the Ohio History Connection since 2009, and has a BA in English from Ohio University and an MLIS from Kent State University. Her areas of expertise include newspaper digitization as well as traditional and digital newspaper research on various topics. When not thinking about newspapers, she can be found reading, crafting or spending time with her adorable dachshund.
