The wonderfully divergent and creative way local artists see a landscape will be on display when the Against the Sky Juried Landscape Art Exhibition opens Oct. 19 at Summit Artspace on East Market.

The artists and photographers who have works in Against the Sky will talk about the genre and their art at a panel discussion on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018, in the main gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market. The panel discussion runs from 7 to 8 p.m.

EXHIBITION OPENING

The show will kick-off with an artist reception on Friday, Oct. 19, from 5-8 p.m. in the Summit Artspace on East Market main gallery. The event and exhibition are free and open to the public. Winners of the juried show will be announced at 7 p.m.

Summit Artspace on East Market is located at 140 E. Market St., Akron. The show runs until Nov. 17.

Celebrating the landscape genre has been a tradition at Summit Artspace since the galleries opened. The time-honored landscape has been well-represented by talented local artists and photographers in gallery shows through the years. But Summit Artspace has also welcomed the creations of artists whose concept of the landscape can’t be categorized.

Landscapes and the related genres of cityscapes, seascapes and nightscapes are delineated by boundaries, the most dominant being the sky or other overlay bearing downward. For this exhibition, artists have been challenged to translate for the viewer the line and its confluence that separate sky from land as well as evoking geography, architecture, community and nature.

Gallery visitors will be delighted and their concept of the landscape tested by 69 paintings and photographs in the main gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market.

Artist Del Rey Loven is the juror. He has held the rank of tenured Professor of Art at The University of Akron since 2006. His prior academic appointment was Chair of Art, Design and Architecture at Judson University in the Chicago area.

GALLERY HOURS

The gallery is open on Thursdays and Fridays, 12-7 p.m.;  and Saturdays, 12-5 p.m. The show is also open for Artwalk on Nov. 3, 5-9 p.m. and Nov. 15, 4-7 p.m. for 3rd THURSDAY.
