In 1915, Harvey Firestone, founder and owner of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, established the Firestone Park community in order to provide housing and community services to employees. The urban designer, Alling S. Deforest, built the neighborhoods around the iconic Firestone shield, and devoted central space for churches, retail, post office, parks, and other community amenities. The Firestone Clubhouse served as a recreational and educational hub for employees, and at the request of Mr. Firestone, the Akron Public Library (as it was then known) supplied materials and staff members and opened the first branch library in 1920. The branch is the oldest branch of the Akron Summit County Public Library system.
