Akron Soul Train’s 2018-2019 fellowship applications are officially open through April 30, 2018. Regional artists of all disciplines, including visual, performing, and written arts, are invited to apply. Fellowships will be available between September 2018 and August 2019, which will be offered depending on artist’s availability noted in the application. Fellowships are usually offered for one month, but can be shorter or longer, depending on the artist’s preference and the proposed project. The stipend amount is $1,000 per month. Fellowship selection criteria is based on the applicant’s artistic excellence, ingenuity, professionalism, and emergence. Fellows are selected by the AST Fellowship Selection Committee consisting of:

  • Arnold Tunstall, Director of Galleries at The University of Akron and AST board member
  • Floco Torres, Hip-hop musician and writer for The Devil Strip
  • Gabe Gott, Flash fiction writer, poet, and AST fellow
  • Jill Bacon Madden, Owner of Jilly’s Music Room and AST board member
  • Stephen Tomasko, Photographer and AST fellow

Chosen artists will be contacted by June 1st and publicly announced by June 30th.  

FELLOWSHIP BENEFITS

  • Time, stipend, and resources to create a new body of artwork for a public exhibition, performance, or reading
  • Recognition in the community and press
  • Opportunities to engage the greater Akron community with your artwork
  • Opportunities to meet new people, artists, and stakeholders in the local art scene

FELLOWSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create a new body of artwork for public display
  • Create and lead a minimum of one program during fellowship
  • Conduct a “take-over” on AST social media
  • Availability for press and outreach opportunities

ELIGIBILITY

  • Artists must be over 18 years of age
  • Artists must be regional (close enough to drive to Akron for events)

Applications will only be accepted through the online platform, but you may view the application questions before paying by clicking the button below. Application underwrites are available for those with financial difficulty.
