Art historian, Dr. Joseph L. Underwood discusses “power objects” with Akron Soul Train on Facebook live.
Across different African people groups, power objects have been created to effect change in the real world. Depending on the context, they are used to strengthen a community, defend from invaders, or heal an illness. In this lecture, art historian and curator Dr. Joseph L. Underwood will address some iconic examples, including minkisi from the Kongo Kingdom, bocio from the Dahomey Kingdom, and boliw from the Bamana peoples.
