Akron in Wonderland: Nocturnes

Akron in Wonderland: Nocturnes is the residency work of filmmaker and installation artist Miriam Bennett.

This immersive, interactive exhibition has transformed the Akron Soul Train gallery into a victorian-esque parlor with film vignettes and curiosities.  Visitors experience Akron Alice’s natural and urban explorations woven throughout a cinematic narrative, with a nocturnal twist.  Still-life scenes with early cinematic devices such as flip books, stereographic photos, zoetropes, and kinetoscopes lead you through a dream-like setting.

Underlining the nocturnal journey are cyanotype envelopes exhibited from the ceiling, filled with dream narratives contributed by the public.  Dancer/choreographer Annie Morgan interpreted some of the dreams, serving to blur the lines between magical and real.  Musical compositions by Theron Brown and Mike Deiner follow you through the adventure.  Finally, as you make your way into the smaller CapSoul Gallery, you will find one hundred watercolor sketches of night pollinating insects drawn from every angle to simulate flight.
