Thompson is joined by the UA faculty Jack Schantz, trumpet, Rock Wehrmann, piano, Dean Newton, guitar, and Mark Gonder, drums, for a concert on Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Stage Door at E.J. Thomas Hall.
A resident of Medina, Ohio, pianist David Thompson was introduced to jazz pianist Bill Evans as a teen and calls it the “defining moment in my life in terms of experiencing such beauty revealed and expressed in such a powerful way. That was the day I began to play the piano again.”
Thompson studied with Don Haas, George Shearing, and Joanne Brackeen in both New York and California. While in California, he composed the music for several films, including “Hiking the Appalachian Trail,” commissioned by the Sierra Club. In addition to composing and teaching, he and his trio perform throughout the country.
Thompson has returned to the music of Bill Evans, performing his works, teaching master classes, and presenting the documentary film, Bill Evans, Time Remembered, at colleges and jazz programs throughout the US and Europe.
