Monday Evening Book Discussion Group (Barracoon: The Story of the Last

Book by: Zora Neale Hurston

In 1927, Zora Neale Hurston travelled to Plateau, Alabama, just outside of Mobile, to interview 86-year-old Cudjo Lewis.  Of the millions of people transported from Africa to America as slaves, he was the only one alive to tell the story of this integral part of the nation’s history. Lewis shared memories of his childhood in Africa, the horrors of his captivity, the harrowing journey to America and the years he spent in slavery until the end of the Civil War.

*This meeting is on the second Monday of the month due to Labor Day.
