April Showers Presented By Chief Curator Janice Driesbach
Love the rainy season and want to learn more about its representation in a work of art? Join Chief Curator Janice Driesbach in the C. Blake McDowell, Jr. Galleries for a discussion of Charles Burchfield’s extraordinary watercolor, Spring Thunderstorm, painted in 1955.
Burchfield was an Ohio native, born in Ashtabula Harbor in 1893. The scene in Spring Thunderstorm likely depicts his backyard in Gardenville, New York (a suburb of Buffalo). About this painting, Burchfield wrote, “It almost seems as if the thunder-clap caused the peach tree to burst into bloom.”
