Beethoven poured his entire self into the Third Symphony. Started as a work in honor Napoleon and the French Revolution, it eventually became a paean to human freedom and the fight for justice everywhere — with Napoleon, by then having crowned himself Emperor, erased from the title page. From its opening chords through the passionate tread of its funeral march to the blazing glory of the finale, this symphony marked the unequivocal start of the Romantic Era in music. The concert also features a recent work by the English composer Thomas Adès along with Belá Bartók’s 20th-century classic Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta.
