Tyranny takes the stage at UA this spring

Akron, OH – The University of Akron (UA) Theatre Program continues its 2019-2020 season, “Re(Viewing) Tyranny,” with “Richard III,” Shakespeare’s account of the English king’s short and bloody reign. Directed by Michael Gatto, UA Adjunct Instructor of Theatre, the play features a cast of 20 including UA students representing diverse areas of study, students from neighboring universities, and community members.  Incorporating arena staging in a surprising setting, “Richard III” will captivate the senses and stir the mind.

UA’s “Richard III” reimagines the blood thirsty tale of a despotic antihero. Guest Director Michael Gatto says: “In Richard III, we are flipping the age-old adage, and bringing to life one of Shakespeare’s great villains who audiences hate to love. We are taking the bard’s play, wrought with relevant themes of abusive power, murder, hubris, envy, grief, and betrayal, and setting it within a once great, long forgotten circus.” Audiences ... view more »
