Virtual MLK Lecture: Matthew A. Cherry

Matthew Cherry produced the Academy Award-winning short film, Hair Love, which was adapted into a bestselling picture book. He will discuss how his creative works reflect Dr. King’s vision and dream.

Matthew Cherry produced the award-winning short film, Hair Love, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2020. Hair Love was adapted into a picture book and immediately became a New York Times Bestseller. Hair Love was nominated for the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Picture Book.

Matthew is a former University of Akron and NFL wide receiver. He was the executive producer for Spike Lee’s highly acclaimed “BlacKkKlansman” and has directed multiple television episodes, including ABC’s “Black-ish” and “Mixed-ish.”
