The Way Of Mind and Body (The W.O.M.B.) is a total wellness community center in which residents of the Akron community can gather for cultural, artistic, and educational activities.
Overview
The Way of Mind and Body, or the “W.O.M.B,” is a 501(c)(3) organization located in Akron, Ohio. It was established in June 2010 when five community-conscience young adults pooled their personal resources to design a center for total wellness. Originally a boxing gym, the physical space of the WOMB was reconstructed to become a smoke- and alcohol-free community center, art gallery, martial arts classroom, meeting place, and performance venue in which positive community programming could be implemented.
Mission
The mission of the WOMB is to promote total mind and body wellness through arts education for youth, adults, and families of all backgrounds in the greater Akron area.
The WOMB represents the Nguzo Saba (7 Principles) year-round:
Umoja – We are united in our vision and values.
Kujichagulia – We decide who we are and what we need to do for ourselves.
Ujima – We work together to solve problems and make things happen.
Ujamaa – We pool our resources and support the economic health of the community.
Nia – We serve the community with a sense of mission and purpose.
Kuumba – We think outside of the box and encourage creative expression.
Imani – We believe in the power of our efforts to make a difference.
