The Children’s Choir Program is a music education and performance program for children and youth. Through its emphasis on the Kodály philosophy this system of music education is based on sequential development of musical skills with emphasis on music literacy, and constant attention to the development of a solid and healthy vocal technique. As a result, students move through the curriculum with a consistent sense of accomplishing ever more challenging music in the Choirs and skills in Musicianship class while at the same time taking personal pride in the ever growing beauty of their own singing voice. The activities provided in the course of each season help singers grow personally and socially by promoting self-esteem, accomplishment and pride. Singers attend weekly training/rehearsal sessions with our Kodály trained professional music teachers, progressing at their own speed and ability to grasp the musical skills required for advancing to the next level. Each season includes at least two on-stage concert performances in December and May. Performance schedules vary by choir and year.

Singers should come to their audition with the New Singer Registration Packet filled out to the best of their ability. Children will be asked a few questions about their own interest in and experience with music and briefly discuss their musical goals with a choral director. During the audition, parents and/or guardians are invited to observe the evaluation process where the entire family will learn more about the Children’s Choir Program. The audition usually takes about 15 minutes and the entire session takes about 30 minutes. Singers and their parents are notified of their choir ensemble and musicianship class level, where applicable, at the end of the session. Singers may be invited to register that day, especially those who come to the audition with the New Singer Registration Packet completed.

Weekly musicianship classes, where applicable, and choir rehearsals for all levels are on Monday evenings at the SCS Downtown Center in Akron OH. There are additionally four (4) rehearsals on the first Saturday morning in October, November, February and March. Times may vary slightly by class/ensemble level.

The annual cost of the Children’s Choir Program class depends on several factors; class level, choir options, and available discounts at the time of registration. Several payment options are available to all Summit Choral Society families and include payment in full, payment by semester, or a monthly payment option. Scholarships and Financial Aid are available. Forms for these tuition assistance programs are located in the Registration Information packet.
