ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Upcycle Art Project intends to challenge artists to take materials that are no longer in use and give them a second life and new function as a piece of art. In doing so, the finished product often becomes more practical, valuable and beautiful than what it previously was.

ReWorks will provide local artists with a $250 stipend and space at Summit Artspace to create a work of art using materials that would have otherwise been landfilled. By supporting artists who work with recycled materials, ReWorks hopes to encourage people to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials and promote new ways of thinking about art and the environment.

Fifteen artists will be selected to participate. They will be provided access to studio space (10’ x 10’) at Summit Artspace for one week — October 28-November 3 — and the completed works will be displayed at an opening to be held November 5 at Summit Artspace as part of the November Art Walk. Artists will also be provided with opportunities to visit select locations where they will have access to and can gather discarded materials for use in their pieces.

Artists are required to include only previously used materials that have been repurposed within the finished piece. Elements of the finished piece can be completed offsite, however, each artist will be required to be present at Summit Artspace on Saturday, October 29 between 12 noon and 2 p.m., and Tuesday, November 1 between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. On those dates, the public will be invited to view the works in-progress and engage in a dialogue with the artists and ReWorks staff.

APPLICATION
ReWorks is seeking applications from Summit County artists for its Upcycle Art Project.

We encourage artists working in a variety of mediums to apply, including painters, textile artists, photographers, printmakers, and conceptual and installation artists. Artists are required to use discarded materials that were previously used and would be landfilled if not reused. The finished piece, whether two- or three-dimensional, must be no larger than 3’ x 6’ and must be mobile. All materials not provided by ReWorks are the responsibility of the artist.

APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE AT
summitartspace.submittable.com/submit/64736

Applications will be accepted September 1-30, 2016.

SCHEDULE
Applications will be accepted online between September 1 and September 30.

The selection committee will review applications and work samples between October 1 and October 8. Applicants will receive email notification of the selection committee’s decision on their application no later than October 15.

SELECTION COMMITTEE
Our selection committee is composed of arts professionals and staff of ReWorks and Summit Artspace.

The committee evaluates applications based on the artist’s demonstrated commitment to the project, the quality of previous work, and the artist’s reputation and references. The committee also considers the artist’s use of materials.
