Job Announcement: Performing and Visual Arts Education Consultant

The Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies is seeking a dynamic individual to lead the state’s performing and visual arts education initiatives. The successful candidate will exhibit strong collaboration skills and a background in performing or visual arts education. This position works with internal and external stakeholders to interpret policy and develop quality learning standards, model curricula, resources, and evaluative tools.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Develops, coordinates and manages statewide education policy and evaluation specific to the Performing and Visual Arts (i.e., dance, drama/theatre, music, visual and media arts) for grades K-12 for the State of Ohio:

Serves as the content expert for the five disciplines;
Manages complex programs and services to improve teaching and learning for Ohio’s students;
Plans, develops and coordinates systemic curriculum initiatives;
Leads the revision of the Fine Arts Learning Standards for the five disciplines;
Leads the development of curriculum models that are aligned with revised learning standards;
Based on collaboration, identifies professional development priorities for the state including design and content, promotion and funding opportunities;
Provides guidance to districts seeking additional local, state, or national funding sources;
Prepares informational tools and products to communicate learning standards to varied audiences (e.g., administrators, educators, parents, legislators, and students);
Recommends best practices for the instruction of K-12 Performing and Visual Arts curricula;
Works in collaboration with other agency staff to develop cross-disciplinary initiatives and strategies that promote effective teaching and learning.

Provides leadership and unity to the performing and visual arts and education communities across the five disciplines:
Serves as liaison to regional, state and national arts organizations and represents the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) as a board member of professional organizations;
Establishes collaborative programs with cultural organizations and foundations to leverage resources and serve schools and students;
Studies legislative changes and forecasts their impact on the performing and visual arts.

Leads and facilitates statewide professional development for a broad array of performing and visual arts stakeholders:
Remains current with and disseminates latest research, literature and best practices in the five disciplines;
Conducts workshops, organizes conferences and regional meetings;
Collaborates with other ODE offices/colleagues, arts education professional associations, local districts, Educational Services Centers (ESCs), the Ohio Arts Council, and higher education to promote and foster content-specific education as well as the quality of general education for all students;
Collaborates with college and university programs to build capacity among pre-service arts educators;
Writes state arts updates for internal and external publication;
Prepares and delivers presentations for professional groups and the general public;
Gathers and interprets data to guide professional development to support educators in the field.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of a Master’s degree in one of the following areas which must include a focus, concentration or certification in performing or visual arts: education [e.g., art education, educational administration/leadership, curriculum]; music; drama/theater; dance; visual art; public policy administration; and 5 years of experience in the following:
• Working in an educational setting (i.e., k-12, higher education) in one of the following capacities (i.e., teacher, cooperating teacher, lead teacher over a performing or visual arts group, board member/officer with professional art association).

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience creating and delivering professional development;
Interpreting legislation and law (i.e., operating standards, Ohio Revised Code, Ohio Administrative Code,

state/federal requirements and guidelines, providing direction/guidance to stakeholders);
Performing one of the following (i.e., educational policy development, assessment/evaluation) in a non-

profit, government and/or educational setting;
Involvement in arts education professional organizations;
Well-rounded performing or visual arts experience across the five disciplines;
Demonstrated experience or knowledge base of current educational issues (e.g., art education, Ohio’s

Strategic Plan for Education, ESSA, standards, curriculum and assessment);
Superb communication skills at all levels of an organization and with customers/partners via multiple media;
Development of tools and technical assistance related to program operations;
Excellent interpersonal, networking and team-building skills.

Additional Information:
–  Compensation is negotiable; depends on candidate’s experience and qualifications; salary range for this position is $60,000 – $75,000 annually.
–  Requires travel throughout State of Ohio and may require overnight stay. (Must be willing and able to secure a valid driver’s license OR supply your own transportation.)
