The Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture is honored to host Thomas Richards, former Artistic Director of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, and his company for a series of two Masterclasses for the performer, at the Balch Street Theatre in Akron, OH.

These Masterclasses will introduce each participant to an exploration of a work on songs of tradition. The workshops will consist in practical sessions of work on songs coming from Afro-Caribbean and African traditions, which have been at the core of Richards’ performing arts research for over 30 years. Such a work on song explores the potential impact that the rhythmic and melodic qualities of certain songs of tradition can have on the persons who sing.

Participants may choose to register for either one or both sessions of work. Participants must pre-register, as there are a limited number of spaces.

For those who are interested in observing the work of the workshops, without participating, there are a limited number of spaces for observers in each workshop session.
