Assumes primary responsibility for youth and family programs (early childhood, non-school youth, and family audiences) including teaching studio classes, organizing family events, maintaining, and staffing hands-on spaces, and developing curriculum and resources. Oversees the maintenance, design, and engagement in the museum’s hands-on, participatory spaces. Performs administrative duties within the department and assists with gallery teaching when necessary. Supervises seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers at education events. Works closely with the communications department to help inform the public about/promote educational programming. Works closely with building services, event, and security staff as necessary to implement programs. Works closely with community organizations dedicated to the support of children and families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES
Has primary responsibility for devising and coordinating initiatives, programs, and events aimed at families and children (non-school). Formats include on-site events, studio classes, gallery experiences, digital offerings, hands-on art-making spaces, and print materials.
Assists in developing new initiatives aimed at youth and family audiences and researching best practices and trends in the field.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
Prepares and manages education program budgets and orders, organizes and inventories supplies and materials for related programs.
Records and maintains records for related programs (e.g. attendance, contact information, etc.).
Drafts contracts and other paperwork for class instructors

TOUR PROGRAM AND INTERPRETATION
Assists with developing interpretive materials (tours, hands-on gallery activities, gallery guides) aimed at youth and families for the collection and special exhibitions.
Assists with gallery teaching and leads tours as needed.

OTHER DUTIES
Writes program descriptions, articles, and other content related to youth and family programs for museum’s print and digital publications.
Undertakes other assignments as requested by the Curator of Education.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree or B.F.A. required. Must have teaching experience, including studio teaching. Must have knowledge of modern and contemporary art and educational strategies; experience coordinating and supervising events and/or programs aimed at children; and experience working in group situations that include children and adults. Knowledge of art materials, processes, and techniques is important. Early childhood teaching experience preferred.  Must be able to effectively collaborate and function as a member of a team as well as function independently. This person must be reliable, creative, energetic, well-organized, and skilled in program planning and implementation. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, as are good people skills. Basic proficiency in Outlook, Excel and other Microsoft Office programs is required. The ability to work with adults as well as children is required. The job will require working some evenings and/or weekends.
