A comedy by Christopher Durang
Directed by Eileen Moushey
Comic playwright Christopher Durang borrows characters and plotlines from Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya — but he remixes them with glee in this gently wacky family comedy set in the present day.
Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie star sister, Masha, swoops in with her hot young boyfriend, Spike, and threatens to sell the house. Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose presence irritates the imperious Masha.
Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play (and the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama League and the Drama Desk!), Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a “sunny new play about gloomy people” (says The New York Times). Brimming with outrageous dialogue, Durang’s latest madcap masterpiece serves up family drama with comic savagery and poses the question: If you could choose your family, would you necessarily choose your family?
