The Friends of Hower House are collaborating in a first-time venture with The University of Akron School of Music for a four concert series, featuring the musical talents of faculty and students. Most musicians will perform in the central hall with guests seated in the rooms that radiate from it in the style of the Akron Sunday School Plan. The four concerts will have the themes of Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Spring.
The University of Akron Guitar Ensemble generally performs music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic and Contemporary eras, but Holiday classics will be the theme for their performance at The Hower House. The ensemble is directed by U of A faculty member James Marron and consists of Graduate and Undergraduate students enrolled in The University of Akron Guitar Program. Guests are welcome to tour the house, which will be all decked for the holidays
Hower House is a Second Empire Italianate structure, built in 1871 by Akron Industrialist, John Henry Hower and his wife, Susan Youngker Hower. The designer of this 28-room Victorian Mansion was Jacob Snyder, a noted Akron architect, perhaps best known for his part in developing the “Akron Plan,” a floor plan widely used in church constructions locally and across the United States between 1870 and 1917. This elegant home is filled with unique treasures and furnishings collected by the Hower Family during their travels around the world. Hower House is open for public and private tours, as well as group tours. The House is open 11 months per year and offers a variety of exhibits and programs. Hower House remains one of the finest and best preserved examples of its style in the country and is on the National Historic Landmark registry.
The cost per individual concert is $15 per person, but only $5 for students with a valid ID. For those wishing to purchase tickets for all four concerts the cost is $50 per person.
