Zines & Screens

Zines & Screens

Presented by Rubber City Prints, Inc. at Rubber City Prints, Inc.

This class is will explore printmaking as a means of conveying information and basic screen printing that can be done just about anywhere.  We’ll start with a brief history of printmaking as a way of disseminating information, looking specifically into typography, imagery, and clarity of information.  Then students will develop a small zine, which we will then use to identify a keystone image that could be used on posters or tee shirts to solidify the brand of the idea.  We will then burn a screen and print a one-color poster or tees to explore the possibilities of screen printing and to teach student the basics of silkscreen for home use.  Note that it is best for this class to come with a few ideas in mind and that students will need to provide their own tee shirts and poster material.

Julia Begg is a Pittsburgh based printmaker currently working in production screen printing.  She graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of the Fine Arts from The Mary Sheller Myers School of Art at The University of Akron where she focused in screen and intaglio printing.  Much of Julia’s work is focused on the dualism that exists in our personalities and how they interact and particularly the way that women work to balance  the two.  She has exhibited at Land of Plenty (Akron), The Myers School of Art (Akron), and at Santa Reperata International School of Art (Florence).
