Enrique Chagoya - Artist Talk

Presented by Kent State University School of Art at Center for the Visual Arts at Kent State

Join us for an artist talk with visiting artist in Print Media, Enrique Chagoya. This lecture is a part of the Kent Blossom Art Lecture Series where visiting artists come from all over the country to teach workshops and give lectures at Kent State University’s School of Art. All lectures begin at 6:00 p.m. in room 165 at the Center for the Visual Arts (325 Terrace Dr. in Kent, Ohio) and are FREE and open to the public.

Drawing from his experiences living on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border in the late 70’s, and also in Europe in the late 90’s, Enrique Chagoya juxtaposes secular, popular, and religious symbols in order to address the ongoing cultural clash between the United States, Latin America and the world as well. He uses familiar pop icons to create deceptively friendly points of entry for the discussion of complex issues. Through these seemingly harmless characters Chagoya examines the recurring subject of cultural clash that continues to riddle contemporary life. Recently his work has been addressing issues on immigration and the economic recession. Chagoya is currently a Full Professor at Stanford University’s Department of Art and Art History.
