Join us at the Akron Sustainer on July 8th to learn about recycling and composting properly with Marcie Kress and Mila Susnjar from Summit ReWorks, followed by a plastic bag upcycling workshop with Ryan Carpenter from Let’s Grow Akron! Guests will cut up plastic grocery bags to use as “plarn,” then will learn how to crochet the plarn into different items, such as rugs and bags.

Summit ReWorks provides solutions and leadership to empower our community, institutions and businesses to develop and utilize environmentally sound, cost-effective recycling and waste management strategies.

The Akron Sustatiner has partnered up with Let’s Grow Akron to bring you Sustainable Saturday’s, taking place on the second Saturday of every month from now through October. The Sustainer is located on the same property of the newly renovated Cascade Lofts. The address is 21 W. North St., Akron 44304.

The Akron Sustainer is a project involving an 8 x 20 foot shipping container built from reused and repurposed materials, acting as an educational hub for residents of Akron, promoting sustainability and green living. Workshops, hands on experiments, and displays will be provided through the programming of the project to educate, engage, and empower our residents on various sustainability topics. The overall objective of the Akron Sustainer is to educate Akron residents on sustainability and green practices, in turn, minimizing our environmental impact on future generations.

Let’s Grow Akron creates and supports community gardens and beautification sites in neighborhoods with limited access to fresh food and green space. They engage these neighbors by working alongside them to grow, prepare and preserve their own food and beautify their neighborhoods. Educational programs and technical assistance is offered to utilize urban lands for food production. They also assist others to create community gardens and offer ongoing support for sustainability.
