Led by Akron Soul Train’s March fellow, Gabe Gott, participants will gain a history of Blackout Poetry, write their own poems and share with the group.
According to Aristotle, poetry is more true than history because “it presents universal truths whereas history gives only particular truths”. Blackout Poetry, also called Erasure, is a relatively new poetic form where one takes a previously written work and blacks out most of the text to create a poem from the remaining words. It is often created from newspaper stories, magazine articles, and pages of text from books. In this workshop, we will be using memoirs of politicians as the source texts to subvert with our black out poetry and reclaim truth from the truthiness.
Gabe Gott lives in Akron, Ohio, with his wife, Sarah, the unwitting caretakers of a home for retired house pets. Gabe has degrees in English from Kent State University and The University of Akron. During the day, he works as a team lead/trainer for a market intelligence company based out of Chicago, but during his free time writes fiction and poetry. He has published a novel, Escapes (2014), two flash fiction chapbooks, The Ever-Present Moment (2016) and Dispatches from the Information Age (2017), and a poetry collection, Live Organ Transplants (2017). His writing has appeared The Cult Magazine, Misplaced Identity, Literally Literary, The Devil Strip, Insomnia & Obsession, Red Fez, Flash Fiction Magazine and 50-to-1.
