Alma Afrobeat Ensemble was founded in Chicago in 2003 by guitarist Aaron Feder. In 2006 Aaron moved to Barcelona in search of a different sound for the AAbE. He quickly found a group of international members, from all continents of the globe. In a short time the band was reformed and headlined the Fiestizaje music and arts festival in 2008. The band then set about recording their first studio album, Toubab Soul which was released in 2010. They have since toured at festivals around the globe and recorded multiple albums.
In 2015 the band changed direction a bit, with singer Joe Psalmist, from Lagos, Nigeria joining the band for their winter/spring tour of the peninsula, Balearic Islands and even a trip to the African continent to play in Ceuta. Joe’s soulful voice and inimitable stage presence brings the band to the next level. 2017 has seen the band on their second North American tour as well as hitting up Berlin, London and France.
World Music @ the Civic celebrates the musical traditions of Summit County residents whose roots are Asian, Hispanic, African, Native American and European. The series honors the rich cultural diversity of our city and encourages cross-cultural engagement through the arts. The series was a winner of a 2016 Knights Arts Challenge Grant.
