Metalsmithing Basics

Kristina Malcolm is a professional artist and silversmith and teaches metalsmithing part-time at local universities. This class is designed to cover many all-purpose techniques in metalsmithing including: sanding, filing, sawing, cutting, piercing, textures (hammer, stamping, etc.), polishing, etching, patinas, cold connections, annealing, soldering, and fabrication. Students will be able to complete several small projects featuring the techniques discussed during classes the first class introduces using a jewelers saw, filing, standing and forming a copper cuff bracelet. The second class features non-ferrous etching with ferric nitrate and focuses on honing sawing and piercing skills.We will also be learning drilling, patinas, and cold connections. The third class introduces silver soldering techniques and fabrication with a small earring project. The final class will focus on advanced silver soldering techniques where students will complete a sterling ring with a stone setting combining all of the hand-working techniques.

Workshop fee is $259 per student for four classes. Materials fee is an additional cost with a $10 minimum each class, will depend on what you use, and will be paid to the instructor during class.
