The Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble returns to the Hudson Library for its eighth year, presenting a colorful new program of music in celebration of the Chinese New Year, using an array of traditional instruments including dizi and xiao (bamboo flutes), suona (shawm), sheng (mouth organ), hulusheng (gourd mouth organ), erhu (vertical fiddle), gaohu (Cantonese vertical fiddle), yehu (coconut fiddle), pipa (pear-shaped lute), qinqin (long-necked lute), gongs, drums, cymbals, and other percussion.

The performance will feature guest artist Jarrelle Barton, a masterful player of the guzheng, an ancient Chinese zither. Using instruments with 16 and 21 strings, Barton (a Cleveland native who is now based in Minneapolis) will perform a variety of subtle and dazzling solo pieces, as well as perform together with the ensemble.

Because 2019 will be the Year of the Pig, the program will also include a performance of “Piggy Fights the Scary Monsters,” an exciting original composition by Canadian musician (and erhu player) Jeremy Moyer, which is based on a story from the famous Chinese novel “Journey to the West.”

Program:
● Shui Long Yin (水龙吟, The Water Dragon’s Moan) – overture for winds and percussion from Beijing opera
● Piggy Fights the Scary Monsters (降妖伏魔) – Cantonese-style music by Jeremy Moyer
● Lusheng Lian Ge (芦笙恋歌, Lusheng Love Song) – movie song based on the music of the Lahu people of Yunnan province
● Xue Shan Chun Xiao (雪山春晓, Spring Dawn on Snow Mountain) – modern guzheng solo
● Gao Shan Liu Shui (高山流水, High Mountains and Flowing Waters) – silk and bamboo music from Zhejiang province
● Gazing at the Moon on a Foggy Morning – original composition by Jarrelle Barton
● Jiao Chuang Ye Yu (蕉窗夜雨, Night Rain on the Plantain Leaves Outside the Window) – Hakka chamber music
● Qianfu De Ai (纤夫的爱, Love of the Barge Hauler) – popular song based on music from Chongqing
● Bawang Bian (霸王鞭, Bawang’s Whip) – ancient music from Xi’an

The concert, which will be held in the library’s rotunda, is free and open to the public and no tickets are required; arrive early for the best seats. For more information, call (330) 653-6658, ext. 1010 or visit
