Hedda Gabler

Hedda Gabler

Presented by The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration at Daum Theatre — The University of Akron

The University of Akron (UA) Theatre Program continues its 2015-2016 season with Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler at Daum Theatre in Kolbe Hall, 328 Buchtel Commons.

In a searing and passionate adaptation by contemporary American playwright Christopher Shinn and directed by UA Theatre Professor James Slowiak, Ibsen’s classic work of modern drama continues to challenge audiences with its strong, controversial heroine and questions of society’s influence in determining personal identity and sexual role. This production of Hedda Gabler also marks the 150th University of Akron production designed by theatre professor and scenic artist Adel Migid. Costumes are designed by Adrienne Jones and lighting design by Chris Hariasz.

Hedda Gabler tells the story of Hedda, the beautiful and intelligent daughter of General Gabler. She marries Jorgen Tesman out of desperation but soon realizes that life with him is dreadfully dull and tedious. Prompted by the return of an old lover and the advances of an amorous judge, Hedda begins a destructive downward spiral of jealousy and manipulation. Hedda’s attempts to regain control of her life and find freedom in a stifling society make her one of the great dramatic characters in the history of theatre. Christopher Shinn’s adaptation, produced on Broadway in 2009, brings Hedda Gabler firmly into the 21st century with its piercing and powerful language.

The Theatre Arts Program at The University of Akron equips undergraduate and graduate students with a broad knowledge of theatre arts and fundamental practical skills in order to prepare them to address the emerging issues and challenges of the theatre profession and a diverse and vibrant society. The Theatre Arts Program provides high quality educational and artistic experiences that enhance the cultural lives of all students at The University of Akron, as well as the residents of the greater Akron community and the Northeast Ohio region.
