Playing with Plastic: Looking Beyond the Bag

Playing with Plastic: Looking Beyond the Bag

Presented by Akron Soul Train and Akron Children's Museum at Akron Children's Museum

Bring plastic bags, take home art!

Are your plastic bags piling up at home? Come join us for STEAM Team Saturday for “Playing with Plastic: Beyond the Bag” as we transform this everyday item into fantastic works of art.

Be sure to bring lots of colorful bags of all kinds, including mailers, we can use to create artworks! The more the merrier!

We will be joined by artist Zelda Zinn, Akron Soul Train artist in residence, to create a piece of plastic art inspired by El Anatsui, a sculptor active in Nigeria, whose work can be seen at the Akron Art Museum. He makes large “quilts” from scavenged and recycled bottle tops sewn together into wonderful and inspiring sculptures.

In our project, plastic bags will be transformed into materials to be woven into one collective quilt, to be displayed later in an art exhibition at Akron Soul Train. We will also be making “stained glass” windows from plastic shapes for participants to take home. Come join us as we take plastic beyond the bag!
