Earth Day Straw Bale Building Workshop

Earth Day Straw Bale Building Workshop

Presented by Crown Point Ecology Center at Crown Point Ecology Center

Join in the fun – make the straw bale cabin move-in ready.

Come for a couple of hours – come for the whole day! We start at 9:00 a.m. and go until we’re tired. The windows are in. The roof is on. Help add the finishing touches to the inside and outside of the straw bale cabin

The straw bale house promises to provide eco-friendly housing for our interns in keeping with our commitment to serve as a role model for food security and sustainable land use. Volunteers will have a unique opportunity to learn from local natural building experts.

We will be applying the final clay plaster coat to our straw bale cabin. This last coat will result in a smooth and colored surface. The finish coat creates a breathing wall by absorbing and releasing moisture. Because clay plaster typically is quite thick it also serves to regulate temperature by warming and cooling quite slowly. On the outside of the house, this effect can even mean that the clay will wick moisture out of the straw and release it to the exterior air.

Give yourself permission to get dirty and let’s finish this cabin together! We’re starting at 9:00 a.m. but you can come and help at any time of the day and stay as long as you can. Bring gloves and a good attitude. Nothing more appropriate on Earth Day than building with earth.
