Live From the Living Room with Gum-Dip Theatre

Presented by Gum-Dip Theatre and ArtsNow at Online/Virtual Space

Join ArtsNow for our next installment of Live From the Living Room with Gum-Dip Theatre! Gum-Dip will perform a solo excerpt from their work-in-progress production entitled, “Three Countries, One Mother”, a winner of the 2019 Knight Arts Challenge.

Three Countries, One Mother is a two-year theatrical project by Gum-Dip Theatre that will culminate in a multilingual play. Based on the true story of Neema Bal’s family, the play will center and highlight the history and culture of Bhutanese-Nepali-Americans by following the journey of three brothers who ended up in three different countries–Bhutan, Nepal, and the United States — because of the Bhutanese refugee crisis and third-country resettlement throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. By splitting the story of the play among three countries, the narrative of each place will represent a different outcome that is linked by one family in the face of displacement. The play will celebrate the strength and resilience of this community while inviting others to have a better understanding of their experience.

In the past 4 years, Gum-Dip Theatre has produced over 80 performances in 42 different locations of original theatrical content based on the stories and histories of the marginalized. GDT believes that the theatre is a space for practicing different factual and imaginary versions of ourselves, for representing the narratives that are often ignored, and for elevating voices and identities that are not included in the mainstream. GDT’s Neema Bal (managing director) and Katie Beck (artistic director) have collaborated with the Nepali-speaking Bhutanese community to produce plays that have explored the personal stories of those who grew up in refugee camps, the experience of being multilingual in a globalized world, and the dreams of a happy and healthy future in the United States.
