Brokers Without Borders

Brokers Without Borders

Presented by Gum-Dip Theatre at Balch Street Theatre

Produced by Gum-Dip Theatre, Brokers Without Borders is a multiethnic, theatrical ensemble of former refugees who identify as cultural brokers, meaning that they act as a bridge between their own culture and another by translating and interpreting regularly for their family and community members. This project will address the divide by creating a cross-cultural original play that demonstrates the experience of navigating an entirely new world and the celebrations of finding success in a globalized community. The ensemble’s stories will combine to make a written history of young people who are bearing the responsibility of their families in addition to their own challenges.

Devised by Neema Bal, Samantha Byake, Hsa Win, and Katie Beck.

PROCESS:
After each performance, there will be a short creative response process where audience members and artists will engage in structured dialogue about the work. This performance is part one of a multi-year project that will continue to build coalition through original performances with immigrants. Since theatre is the art of action, we create from community response and artist development.

COVID GUIDELINES:
All audience members are required to wear a mask. Temperature checks will happen before entering the theatre. There is limited, social distanced seating so please purchase a ticket at the link above.

SPONSORS:
Special thanks to Akron Community Foundation and Ohio Arts Council for supporting this project.
