Delaware Girl: The Art of Valerie J. Evans Opening Reception

Presented by Cummings Center for the History of Psychology at The University of Akron at Cummings Center for the History of Psychology at The University of Akron

Drawing and painting have been an important aspect of Valerie J. Evans’s life from a very young age. Delaware Girl: The Art of Valerie J. Evans features Evans’s work with colored pencil, which she began experimenting with when her children were young, when she needed to work in a medium that allowed her to drop whatever she was doing at a moment’s notice. Evans has been able to achieve the painterly effects of a fine oil painting through colored pencil portraits that reflect her own Native American heritage (Delaware/Six Nations). In Delaware Girl, these portraits are paired with recent works depicting women of a bygone age, donned in vintage bathing suits and caps, sunbathing at the beach or pool. Together, these works achieve an underlying effect of quiet reverence and dignity.
