Have you ever imagined what it could be like to integrate a professional artist (such as a
graphic designer, photographer, actor, dancer, poet, or musician) into your classroom? Are
you interested in thinking, learning, and teaching in new and different ways with the help of a
teaching artist? Perhaps you’re excited at the opportunity to expose your students to the lives
and roles of professional artists in their community. If so, you’re invited to a virtual
professional development session on Wednesday, November 30 from 4 – 5 p.m. to learn
how your school can apply for grant funding to work with a professional teaching artist
during the 2023-2024 academic year.
This PD session is being offered by Akron Public Schools (APS) in collaboration with the Ohio
Arts Council (OAC) and ArtsNow to assist teachers and their schools in applying to the OAC’s
grant program, TeachArtsOhio. Under TeachArtsOhio, professional teaching artists work with
school staff to bring their education communities together to share engaging, personal, high-
quality arts learning experiences in an artist residency-style setting. Recent TeachArtsOhio
experiences have included:
 a 40-day visual arts residency with K-12 students to develop a semester course of
study for ceramics to immerse students in the principles of 3-Dimensional designs,
hand-building, developing and applying glazes, clay manipulation, and wheel
throwing
 a 74-day dance residency with elementary students focusing on student exploration
and performance of a variety of contemporary and traditional African dances
 a 120-day musical theatre residency with high school students to deliver a year-long
study of the disciplines that make up the world of musical theatre and foster interest
and growth in technique, history, and professional and collegiate acumen
We hope you’ll join us on November 30 to learn about TeachArtsOhio and how it can
positively impact your students’ learning and extend opportunities for engagement with your
larger community. This session is intended for all APS educators, including fine arts, general,
and content specific classrooms. Please consider sharing this invitation with your building
colleagues.
