Youth Empowerment Summit

Youth Empowerment Summit

Presented by Summit County Historical Society at Shaw JCC and Lippman School

The Summit County Historical Society’s John Brown Institute will host a free youth summit in partnership with Shaw JCC and The Lippman School to provide students in the 8th – 12th grade the opportunity to express their voice and work with facilitators who will be encouraging them to take charge of their lives and do great things. The program is sponsored in part by Executive Ilene Shapiro, County of Summit, Job and Family Services.

Romeo Travis, retired professional basketball player, coach and community speaker, will be the keynote. Towanda Mullins, chair of the Sojourner Truth Statue Project, will share the history of Sojourner Truth and how students can be a part of the Sojourner Truth Statue and Plaza future.

At their roundtable groups, teens will discuss, learn and develop ideas that address issues facing our community that are challenging them. They can become part of the solution as champions of change with civic engagement.

The program is free and includes lunch. Students may be dropped off between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Educational booths will be available for students to learn more about how they can participate in community programming, volunteering and planning. The event ends at 2:30 p.m. for pick up.
