Work in Process Showing: SUPERCELL by slowdanger

Presented by The National Center for Choreography at the University of Akron at Guzzetta Hall - University of Akron

Join us in Guzzetta Hall Sandefur Theatre where choreographers anna thompson + taylor knight (Pittsburgh, PA) will share SUPERCELL, an evening-length multidisciplinary quintet performance, responding to climate change, media sensationalism, desensitization, and environmental collapse. The title refers to supercells, large storms of deep, persistent updrafts often resulting in many tornadoes. While supercells are terrifying, ominous, and harbingers of great damage, they are simultaneously breathtaking environmental events when witnessed from afar. The effect is similar to sensationalist media, instantly amplifying catastrophic events for an insatiable public consumption.

slowdanger (anna thompson + taylor knight) is a multidisciplinary performance entity utilizing movement, found material, integrative technology, electronic instrumentation, and vocalization to produce performance work since 2013. They have been featured in/by Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” (2018), MoMA, The Kennedy Center, The Warhol Museum, Usine C, and more. They are 2022 awardees of the NPN Creation Fund and NEFA/National Dance Project to create their upcoming work, SUPERCELL.
