Hundreds of regional artists are contemplating their entries for the most anticipated and final art competition of the year at Summit Artspace, Kaleidoscope. Many compete, but only a fraction make it into the show, where the quality of the work is uniformly high. This year’s exhibition will fill the month of December with world class art plus a series of 10 demonstrations by respected, regional artists on three consecutive Saturdays.

The show will open with two festive “first” nights in a row, the traditional Meet-the-Artists Reception and Awards on Friday, Dec. 4, followed by the Akron Art Walk on Saturday, Dec. 5.

The art exhibition was founded by Akron Visual Arts, an umbrella group of four area arts organizations — Artists of Rubber City, Akron Society of Artists, the Women’s Art League and Cuyahoga Valley Art Center — in 2003. Active members are eligible to compete in Kaleidoscope. The show has become a prominent and frequently reviewed source of inspiration for Northeast Ohio art aficionados.

It is housed in the first-floor gallery of Summit Artspace, 140 E. Market St., which is next door to the Akron Art Museum in the Akron arts district.

Jurors will be Charles Basham, an atmospheric landscape painter, and Julie Friedman, printmaker and cut paper installation artist. Both live in Medina. They will award a total of $450 in cash prizes for first through third place winners, plus the coveted Bob Pozarski Kaleidoscope award to the People’s Choice winner.

DEMONSTRATIONS/WORKSHOPS

The 10 free artist demonstrations will be presented in a staggered format on three consecutive Saturdays, Dec. 5, 12 and 19, beginning at noon and starting on the  next consecutive hour. Some workshops will last longer than an hour.

NO REGISTRATION NEEDED. Just show up and join in!
