Founded in 1953, the Akron Zoo is a non-profit, world conservation zoo with over 700 animals from around the world. Located just west of Downtown Akron, the zoo strives to provide a dynamic, financially responsible, guest centered animal experience that is energized by innovation and fun. When you visit the Akron Zoo you’ll get nose-to-nose with more than 700 animals, including penguins, lemurs, tigers, jaguars, and more. Marvel at the Lehner Family Zoo Gardens with over 7,000 plants and flowers. Make sure you visit Journey to the Reef, which includes animals that live on or near the reef like lion fish, octopus, clown fish, and more, Enjoy the Mike & Mary Stark Grizzly Ridge exhibit, which is the largest expansion in the zoo’s history and includes grizzly bears, a walk-in aviary, river otters, red wolves, bald eagles and more. The zoo is Summit County’s number one attended attraction with over 367,000 visitors in 2014. The zoo participates in over 60 conservation programs and conducts almost 900 education programs per year. The Akron Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). With its more than 225 accredited members, the AZA is a leader in global wildlife conservation.
