Don Peoples’ photograph Capital of Rubber Series: Goodyear is part of the permanent collection of art at Stark State College Akron. The photo shows historic Goodyear Hall with the iconic Goodyear sign on the roof. The sepia tone of the print represents the Rust Belt and its role in transforming the USA into an industrial powerhouse. Completed in 1920, Goodyear Hall was part of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company world headquarters complex. It is now The East End, a mixed-use redevelopment initiative. At one time, five of the six largest tire manufacturers in this country were headquartered in Akron. That was how the city earned the nickname “Rubber Capital of the World.”
