Cleveland Artist Marti Higgins at Gallery of Framing and Art, LLC

Marti Higgins creates modernistic abstract and impressionistic landscapes by instinctually exploring the emotional and evocative power of color. Growing up near New York City in the 60’s and 70’s, abstract expressionism was the art of Marti’s’ youth. Exposure to the art of Alexander Calder, Romare Bearden, and Willem De Kooning rooted her aesthetic.  The bold color, rhythm and subject matter she attempts to express in her artwork are due to these early influences.

Working intuitively with color and shape, Marti explores relationships between objects; where they touch, overlap or separate. Working in layers, she exposes these relationships. Under-layers of color are not immediately visible in a given piece. A surprise color, which at first glance may seem incongruous, has a way of solidifying the composition.

“I especially like to experiment with the relativity of color; how they influence each other by proximity.”

Marti Higgins has a BA in English Literature from the University of Delaware and a degree in Studio Art from Cleveland State University.

Her work is included in the collections of PNC Bank- Cleveland-Pittsburgh-Dayton-Toledo, Glidden House, Cuyahoga County Administration Building, Nordson Corporation, Cleveland State University, and Metro Health and Southwest General Hospitals.  Recent exhibitions include The Morgan Conservatory of Paper Making, national competition Paper Trails, Ursuline College – Eastern Edge (First Place), Still Point Gallery in Cleveland Hts., Box Gallery in Akron, AAWR – Women of the Western Reserve, and AAWR’s The New Now regional competition.
