Impressionistic Landscapes and Abstractions

Marti Higgins creates modernistic abstract and impressionistic landscapes by instinctually exploring the emotional and evocative power of color. Growing up near New York City in the 60’s and 70’s, abstract expressionism was the art of Marti’s’ youth. Exposure to the art of Alexander Calder, Romare Bearden, and Willem De Kooning rooted her aesthetic.  The bold color, rhythm and subject matter she attempts to express in her artwork are due to these early influences.

I am inspired by the perfect organization, and yet sense of disorder,

I feel when in nature. ~ Marti

Working intuitively with color and shape, Marti explores relationships between objects; where they touch, overlap or separate. Working in layers, she exposes these relationships. Under-layers of color are not immediately visible in a given piece. A surprise color, which at first glance may seem incongruous, has a way of solidifying the composition.
