Western Reserve Playhouse auditions for “Heathers- The Musical” Written by Kevin Murphy & Laurence O’Keefe Directed by Kevin Kelly – Musical Direction by Deborah “Ingy” Ingersoll – Choreography – Kristy Cruz SYNOPSIS: Based on the cult classic film of the same name, Heathers is the story of Veronica Sawyer, a senior at the fictional Westerberg High. Veronica longs to be cool like the clique of it-girls that runs Westerberg: the unaffected, unattainable Heathers. Unfortunately, in addition to awesome levels of popularity, the Heathers are also cruel, choosing to mock and bully their kingdom into submission. When Veronica uses her skills as a forger to get the Heathers out of detention, she impresses their leader Heather Chandler— so much so that they agree to let her into their exclusive club. At first, Veronica is thrilled—until she finds out that being one of the Heathers means bullying the same kids she used to call friends. Meanwhile, Veronica finds herself attracted to a mysterious newcomer at school named Jason Dean (JD). When an innocent drink mix-up results in the accidental poisoning of Heather Chandler, JD convinces Veronica to stage Heather’s suicide. The results are so successful that Veronica and JD, exhilarated with their newfound power, resolve to rid Westerberg of the cruelly popular elite forever. Featuring a raw, edgy, and culturally relevant score. Please make selection that can present a demonstration of a belt. Those auditioning are required to bring sheet music in your appropriate key to the audition. (Bound and double sided would be appreciated). A piano accompanist will be provided. If you have a one-minute monologue to share, please do. Please bring a headshot and resume to auditions. Headshots and resumes are appreciated, but not required. Any headshots of resumes provided may not be returned. Please bring all conflicts for the proposed rehearsal schedule to the audition. Audition and Callback: During auditions you will be asked to read and sing provided excerpts from the show. Callbacks will include also include dance, please bring appropriate dance clothes and shoes for movement. Casting: ALL roles are open to all ethnicities. No equity contracts at this time. The age requirement is 18+. While it is a high-energy black comedy, the show opens conversations about dark issues, including bullying, teen suicide, sexual assault and violence in schools. The ages of the “high school” characters will be determined from the audition pool. Roles: Veronica Sawyer: F, 18-30 She burns to be both cool and kind but doesn’t know yet how to be both at the same time. Fierce sense of right and wrong, keen sense of ironic humor. Thinks she’s an old soul, but she’s still innocent enough to be blindsided by love/hormones (or shocked by cruelty). Voice: high belting required, up to high G, high Ab preferable. Must have dynamic and stylistic range. JD: M, 18-30 He is darkly charismatic, compelling, attractive, charming on the outside yet very damaged on the inside. Keen smarts and strong inventive comedy. Voice: strong, confident belt to at least an Ab, A preferable; wide emotional range. Heather Chandler: F, 18-30 Richest, hottest, most magnetic, cruelest girl in town. Relishes power and wields it like a scalpel – no fear, no patience, no mercy. Voice: strong belt to D, Eb preferred. Heather McNamara: F 18,-30 Beautiful, innocent, stupid, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Voice: strong belt to D, Eb preferred. Heather Duke: F, 18-30 Whipping-girl of the three Heathers. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer. Voice: strong belt to C, D preferred. Martha Dunstock: F, 18-30 Nicknamed “Martha Dumptruck,” the opposite of hot, confident, or popular. Beautiful soul, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Voice: strong belt to E or F, wide vocal expression. Ram Sweeney: M, 18-30 Linebacker. Big, insensitive to the feelings of others, ruled by appetites. Voice: strong baritone, belt to F#, G preferred, some falsetto useful. Kurt Kelly: M, 18-30 Quarterback and Captain. Big, chiseled, rude, entitled, cocky. Mean, thinks he’s the brains in the friendship with Ram. Voice: tenor, strong belt to Ab or A, some falsetto. Ram’s Dad/Big Bud Dean: M, 40-55 Ram’s Dad is a former football player turned suburban dad who has never outgrown his glory days in high school. Hates weakness, but capable of soul-searching when tragedy strikes. Actor also plays Big Bud. Voice: baritone/tenor. Dean: M, 40-55 JD’s single dad. Big jolly personality that barely conceals the enormous rage bubbling just below the surface. Quite possibly a serial bomber. Voice: baritone/tenor, power country/gospel belt to Ab. Ms. Fleming/Veronica’s Mom: F, 40-45 Ms. Fleming is an aging hippie teacher, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Hungry for the spotlight, resentful of entitled youth. Actor also plays Veronica’s Mom, who is easygoing, distant, yet capable of laying down the law. Voice: great belt up to C

Western Reserve Playhouse Auditions “The Boys in the Band” by Mart Crowley A rehearsed reading directed by Jim Fippin SYNOPSIS: The year is 1968. In his upper East Side apartment, Michael is throwing a birthday party for Harold, a self-avowed “thirty-two-year-old, pockmarked Jew fairy,” complete with a surprise gift: Cowboy, a street hustler. As guests arrive and the evening wears on, fueled by drugs and alcohol, bitter, unresolved conflicts and resentments come to light when a game of “Truth” goes terribly wrong. This groundbreaking play premiered Off-Broadway in 1968 and ran for 1,001 performances, and was recently revived on Broadway. Extremely handsome. Hank: 32, tall, solid, athletic, attractive. Bernard: 28, African-American, tall, gaunt, good-looking, dressed in Ivy League clothes. Cowboy: 22, muscle-bound, “too pretty.” Alan: 30, aristocratic Anglo-Saxon features. Character descriptions are taken from the play and the ages and physical descriptions should NOT be taken as literal guidelines for casting. Bernard, however, will be cast as an African-American. They offer a very broad outline to give a rough idea of character types, or stereotypes, if you will. Before auditioning, actors are strongly encouraged to read the play. Western Reserve Playhouse auditions for “Anne of Green Gables” from the novel L.M. Montgomery, adapted by Joseph Robinette Directed by Brianna Joi Synopsis: This new dramatization captures the charm and excitement of L.M. Montgomery’s enduring classic about an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, from her first encounter with her austere guardian to her thrilling graduation from Queen’s Academy. The play faithfully recreates the memorable events and characters from the brilliant novel. All the tragedies and triumphs that mark Anne’s growth from adolescence to early adulthood are here: her friendship with Diana, her feuds with Gilbert, her adoration of Matthew, the mistaken wine bottle, the cake disaster, the broken leg, the scholastic achievements, and the saving of Green Gables. Whether the playgoer is an “old friend” of Anne’s or meeting her for the first time, this play will solidify a lasting friendship between the audience and one of literature’s most unforgettable characters. Roles Available: Anne Shirley (13-18): Anne is a spirited red-headed orphan who comes to Green Gables to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. She tends to talk too much, but loves deeply. She is passionate with a flare for the dramatic. Anne has a positive attitude, but her temper can get her in trouble. Throughout the course of the play, Anne transforms from a girl to a beautiful, intelligent young woman. Marilla Cuthbert (40-60): An independent, private, no-nonsense unmarried woman who raises Anne with her brother Matthew at Green Gables in Avonlea. She struggles with Anne’s temper, dramatic tendencies, and wild imagination but over the years begins to care deeply for her. Matthew Cuthbert (45-60): Marilla’s brother. He is quiet and a man of few words. He is irresistibly drawn to Anne from the moment he meets her. He often helps Anne through some of her toughest moments and helps Marilla see the good in her. Gilbert Blythe (15-20): Gilbert quickly becomes Anne’s adversary when he calls her “carrots”. Their rivalry extends to their schoolwork as well, but the two have a mutual admiration for each other which blossoms into love. Diana Barry (13-18): Diana is Anne’s bosom friend. She is sweet and adores Anne’s vitality. She comes from a wealthy home. She has dark hair that Anne envies. Rachel Lynde (40-55): Long time neighbor of Matthew and Marilla. Rachel wants to know all the business of everyone in Avonlea. She loves to gossip, and offers unsolicited advice freely. Mrs. Barry (30-45): Diana’s mother. She is wealthy and difficult to please. She is unsure of Anne, but eventually grows to love her just as the others do. Minnie May Barry (7-11): Diana’s younger sister who gets very ill and Anne comes to her rescue. Josie Pye (13-18): Anne’s classmate and often times, rival. She is typically snobbish and comes from wealthy family. Jane Andrews (13-18): One of Anne’s classmates and friends. She is often with Anne for parties and adventures. Ruby Gillis (13-18): One of Anne’s classmates and friends. She is often with Anne for parties and adventures. Moody MacPherson (13-18): One of the boys in Anne’s class at the Avonlea school. He plans to be a minister. Western Reserve Playhouse auditions for “Assassins” By Stephen Sondheim and Book by John Weidman Directed by Dawn Sniadak-Yamokoski – Musical Direction by Bryan Bird and Dave Stebbins Synopsis: A multiple Tony Award-winning theatrical tour-de-force, Assassin’s combines Sondheim’s signature blend of intelligently stunning lyrics and beautiful music with a panoramic story of our nation’s culture of celebrity and the violent means some will use to obtain it, embodied by America’s four successful and five would-be presidential assassins. Bold, original, disturbing and alarmingly funny, Assassins is perhaps the most controversial musical ever written. Assassins lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in a one-act historical “revusical” that explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, writers, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish roller coaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet, interact and inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream. Will also play the part of the Proprietor, the “dark” voice of America. (Requires a Southern Accent.) SARA JANE MOORE (F, 40- 50) Alto, F3 – Eb5. Attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, CA, on September 22, 1975. A frazzled housewife with little sense. CHARLES GUITEAU (M, 40s-50s) Tenor, A2 – Ab4. Assassinated President James Garfield in the waiting room of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station, Washington, D.C., on July 2, 1881. Dashing but mad. LYNETTE “SQUEAKY” FROMME (F, 25 – 35) Soprano, A3 – G5. Attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford at the Capitol Park in Sacramento, CA on September 5, 1975. A pixie hippie in love with Charles Manson. LEON CZOLGOSZ (M, 25 – 35) Baritone, G#2 – G4. Assassinated President William McKinley at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. on September 6, 1901. A young poverty-worn radical. (Role requires a Polish Accent.) GIUSEPPE ZANGARA (M, 25 – 35) Tenor, B2 – A4. Attempted to assassinate President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt as he greeted well-wishers in Bayfront Park, Miami, FL on February 15, 1933. An angry, heavily-accented Italian immigrant. (Role requires an Italian Accent and to speak some phrases in Italian.) SAMUEL BYCK (M, 40s-50s) Baritone, D3 – G4. Attempted to assassinate President Richard Nixon by hijacking a commercial jetliner. Hysterically irate schlep in a Santa Claus suit. JOHN HINCKLEY (M, 20-35) Tenor, A2 – G4. Attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan as he left the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. on March 30, 1981. A love-obsessed and depressed college student. The University of Akron’s School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration and New World Performance Lab proudly present Out of Silence: Abortion Stories from the 1 in 3 Campaign. This is a grassroots movement designed to ignite a new conversation surrounding abortion through the art of storytelling. Along with several short plays written by female playwrights from the D.C. area, we would like to include some pieces from you! Do you have your own story about abortion? Tell us. It can be a story, a poem, a song, a picture, a feeling. Those with printmaking experience will have access to our printing equipment, but any artist may apply. Our studio is equipped with a letterpress, 2 etching presses, inking stations, screen printing area, clean work-space area, and 2 washing sinks. This position requires the artist to care for the facilities and support our mission and educational opportunities. Requirements Must have proof of experience in fine art and/or printmaking via resume Must apply & be approved by Board of Directors Keyholder of Rubber City Prints limited to 3 month, 6 month, 12 month terms. Must choose term with application.
