Summit Artspace is celebrating rising artists with its inaugural, county-wide exhibition for local high school seniors. The Starburst Regional Juried High School Exhibition invites all Summit County high schools to showcase artwork by senior students.

Each participating school may enter up to five artworks from its senior class. The Starburst application is free and the deadline to submit artwork via Submittable is March 4.

A jury composed of high school- and college-level visual arts educators will award first, second, and third place cash prizes to artists who submit outstanding work. This year’s jurors include Janet Baran, retired visual art educator from North Canton High School; Arnold Tunstall, gallery director of the Emily Davis Gallery at the University of Akron Myers School of Art; and Susan Yingling, retired visual and performing art educator from Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts.

The University of Akron Myers School of Art will award one $500 scholarship to a Starburst participant. The winner will be selected by Arnold Tunstall and will be disbursed once the student is a confirmed art major at the University of Akron for the following academic year (2022-23).

Starburst will run from April 8 – May 21, 2022. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 8 from 5-7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Awards will be announced at 6 p.m.

Please contact Summit Artspace’s Gallery and Programs Assistant, Sam Imrie, at  sam@summitartspace.org with questions regarding Starburst.
