Playing with Plastic: Looking Beyond the Bag

Come join Akron Soul Train and the Akron Children’s Museum for a STEAM Team Saturday workshop where we transform plastic bags into fantastic works of art.

Bring plastic bags, take home art!

Are your plastic bags piling up at home? Come join us for STEAM Team Saturday for “Playing with Plastic: Beyond the Bag” as we transform this everyday item into fantastic works of art.

Be sure to bring lots of colorful bags of all kinds, including mailers, we can use to create artworks! The more the merrier!

We will be joined by artist Zelda Zinn, Akron Soul Train artist in residence, to create a piece of plastic art inspired by El Anatsui, a sculptor active in Nigeria, whose work can be seen at the Akron Art Museum. He makes large “quilts” from scavenged and recycled bottle tops sewn together into wonderful and inspiring sculptures.

In our project, plastic bags will be transformed into materials to be woven into one collective quilt, to be displayed later in an art exhibition at Akron Soul Train. PARKING INFO

Lock 3, located in the middle of downtown Akron, is surrounded by several parking decks and a surface lot. The decks include the Summit County Parking Deck on High Street, the O’Neil’s Parking Deck on State Street and the Cascade Parking Facility off of Mill Street. Surface lots are located on W. Bowery Street west of Main Street.
