In response to a British subject asking to describe Akron, Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo fame responded. After his answer Akron was known throughout the world as “The Liverpool of the Americas.”
From the mid-70s throughout the 80s Akron was churning out so much great music that the movement was to be known as the “Akron Sound.” Bands such as The Rubber City Rebels, Tin Huey, Devo, The Bizarros and Chrissie Hynde had been signed by major record labels and there was a second wave of Akron Bands impossible to categorize were ROCKIN’ the underground music scene. The bands Trudee & The Trendsetters, The Action, Unit 5, the F-Models The Walking Clampetts, The Bettys and many others played incredible original music in the hopes of being signed as the previous bands did. Their legacies have continued to inspire the musicians throughout the 90s and on into today.

The “Akron Sound” Museum’s mission statement is to foster and promote Akron’s talent and entertainment venues. We will continue to keep alive vital parts of Akron’s music legacies by gathering and displaying artifacts from important moments in Akron’s music, performance and spoken word histories.
Performances at the Weathervane Playhouse, The Actor’s Summit and Coach House Theatre are included in our mission. Akron Public Schools with strong music programs and histories such as Firestone and Miller South are an integral part of our music appreciation program. The spoken words of Sojourner Truth “Ain’t I a woman” and Dr. Bob “Keep it Simple” are an essential part of the “Akron Sound.”
During the month of May there will be a lot of buzz surrounding the “Akron Sound” Museum. Cleveland magazine and The Devil Strip plan to write feature articles. Mark Mothersbaugh is doing an art show at the Akron Art Museum and the “Akron Sound” Museum hopefully will be announcing its brick & mortar location.
Follow up press releases will be distributed as May draws closer and more attention is generated to this future Akron tourist attraction.
