This event is a follow up to “Black, White, and Beyond” by Rethinking Race at the University of Akron, a forum in which race and race-related issues can be discussed, examined, and hopefully, better understood.
William Nu’utupu Giles is in Akron as a part of ‘Until Name Becomes Prayer,’ a Pacific Islander poetry tour (https://www.facebook.com/events/1770625059623052/).
On February 27th, this international poetry slam champion will be at the Student Union Starbucks spitting some words followed by a Q&A. Curious about a Polynesia that is not Moana, and a Hawai’i that isn’t plastic leis? Come to the Student Union Starbucks where you’ll find an open stage and a crowd gathered around! Will’s poetry finds the political seeds in personal stories and crosses oceans of immigrant identity, colonization, representation, and masculinity. His work has been featured by NBC News, The National Parks Service, HBO, Bustle, LitHub, and Button Poetry. “All of my poems are stories about home” says Will, “And all of my hopes are to learn about yours, Akron.”
