William Alfred Nu’utupu Giles is a second generation Samoan Immigrant, Poet, and Arts Educator born in Honolulu, Hawaii. We are raising money to bring Will to Ohio as a part of his poetry tour across the mainland with his NEW chapbook “Until Name Becomes Prayer.”
Until Name Becomes Prayer is a traveling poetry show that pays homage to every indigenous and immigrant mouth that had to become a history book.
Our vision is to have Will perform at Summit Artspace, a sponsor in Akron, Ohio, on the evening of February 26th in collaboration with other local Akron creatives (theater, music, dance). We have 350 seats in the venue, and would love to save one for you. We want the event to be FREE and accessible to the entire community in the Greater Akron area to come listen to Will’s words as well as be immersed in the stories of Akron’s creatives!

On the evening of February 27th, Will is planning to lead writing workshops at Summit Artspace for local Akron teens to help them explore identity, culture, and home. This is some of the work that Will does in Hawai’i, and it will be a great gift for teens in Akron to sit under his teaching and learn from him.
To make this dream a reality, we are looking to raise $2,500 by December 31st. We do not want to bring Will to town if our community is not invested in taking a heart posture of learning and listening. If you believe in the possibility of this vision (and Will) to lead our community, please give $10 or $20 so we can make this a reality!
There will also be an open fundraising event (in addition to this gofundme) called “No, this is not a luau” which will be held at The Front Porch on December 13th from 5:00pm-8:00pm as a part of this fundraising campaign. “No, this is not a luau” also doubles as an educational hub for people to explore and learn about Polynesia and Polynesian cultures, and to ask questions in a nonjudgmental space.
